Dear Jimmy - How to tackle AA
Submitted by jimmy on 14 June, 2010 - 18:57Welcome to 'Dear Jimmy' - The section of the site where we answer and share questions posed to us. The questions are sent usually to all of us and we often answer collectively, but it's my job to administer this service so I get to call this section 'Dear Jimmy'.
Our answers, as always with Rock Solid Game, Sarge School and Street Storm, are given along the lines of - this is what works for US. None of it is supposition or theory. It's us answering based on the field experience we have.
Dear Jimmy,
As per your text, I've signed up for the may 1st beginers seminar and I want to use weekends to start working on my approach anxiety. Were there any tips, hints or methods I can use?
I'm a reasonably shy guy but am willing to work hard.
Regards,
Student

Dear Student,
We are currently writing a course for remote learning that covers what you seem to be looking for. In the meantime, for approach anxiety try the following.
Leave your house on Saturday morning. Find a tree. Tear off 15 leaves.
You can’t go home until you have thrown away all 15 leaves.
Leaves 1 – 5
You lose a leaf just by approaching someone (anyone age or sex) and asking a question (what time is it, where is the shop), making firm eye contact and with a smile. Instead of saying goodbye, offer a high five. Whatever happens, just smile and laugh like you’re a devil may care, fun kind of guy. Do more if you can but to lose a leaf it has to be Question, Eye Contact, Smile, Hi 5.
Leaves 6 – 10
You have to do exactly as you did with the first 5 leaves only after the open, you have to make some kind of fun, friendly observation about the person you are talking to. Hi five before you leave. Do more if you can but to lose a leaf it has to be Question, Eye Contact, Smile, Observation, Hi 5.
Leaves 11-15
Same as leaves 6-10 only this time you have to use a proper opener, not just what time is it, stack to another opener, make an observation and then before you leave you have to say ‘you’re interesting, we should hang out sometime’.
By the time you’re doing the heavy stuff you’ll have long lost your approach anxiety. It actually goes by about the 4th leaf.
Jimmy
